Standard Operating Procedure (SOP): Skincare Consultation Using Skin Type Solutions
Title: Skincare Consultation Protocol using Skin Type Solutions
Purpose: To ensure every client receives a medically accurate, personalized skincare regimen based on their Baumann Skin Type as determined by the Skin Type Solutions diagnostic quiz.
Performed by: Licensed aesthetician, RN, NP, PA, or MD
Estimated Time: 30–45 minutes
Frequency: Initial visit and as needed (recommended every 3–6 months)
1. Preparation (Before the Client Arrives)
· Ensure the client has completed the Skin Type Solutions Quiz online prior to the consultation.
· Access the client’s quiz results through the Skin Type Pro platform, which will include:
o Quiz response summary
o Baumann Skin Type (e.g., DSNW)
o Evidence-based product recommendations
o Guidance on skin issues and ingredient tolerances
· Review the client’s quiz results and pre-populate chart notes if available.
· Set up a clean, private, and welcoming consultation room.
2. Client Intake & Consent
· Greet the client and explain that today’s consultation will be tailored using the results of their Skin Type Quiz.
· Confirm and update:
o Medical history (especially allergies, topical/oral prescriptions)
o Current skincare routine and any past adverse reactions
o Lifestyle factors (sun exposure, sleep, hydration, stress)
· Ensure signed consent forms are in place (including HIPAA, photography, and treatment if needed).
3. Review and Confirm Skin Type Results
· Share the client’s Baumann Skin Type result (e.g., DSNW – Dry, Sensitive, Non-Pigmented, Wrinkled).
· Use visuals or printouts to educate the client on what this skin type means in terms of:
o Oil production
o Sensitivity/inflammation
o Pigmentation risk
o Aging/wrinkles
· Explain how their quiz answers guided this classification and discuss whether they feel it reflects their experience.
4. Verbal Client Interview (to personalize further)
Use these questions to supplement the quiz insights:
Skin Behavior & Tolerance - “How has your skin been feeling over the last few months?” - “Do you notice any stinging, burning, or redness with certain products or treatments?”
Lifestyle & Habits - “What’s your sun exposure like on a typical day?” - “How often do you exfoliate or use active ingredients like vitamin C or retinoids?” - “Do you travel frequently or live in a dry or humid climate?”
Client Goals - “What results are you hoping to achieve in the next 3–6 months?” - “Are there specific concerns (e.g., dark spots, fine lines, redness) you want to prioritize?”
5. Skin Assessment (Optional but Recommended)
· Perform a brief visual and tactile skin assessment to confirm quiz accuracy.
· Use a skin analyzer (e.g., Wood’s lamp, digital imaging) if available.
· Note areas of concern like inflammation, dehydration, laxity, or congestion.
6. Review Product Recommendations
· Pull up the client’s personalized regimen from Skin Type Pro.
· Review each recommended product category (Cleanser, Moisturizer, SPF, etc.), explaining:
o Why it’s appropriate for their skin type
o When and how to use it
o What results to expect and when
· Ask about budget or ingredient sensitivities to help fine-tune the product selection.
7. Present and Document Home Care Plan
· Finalize the recommended regimen (morning and evening).
· Provide the client with a printed or emailed version of the plan.
· Offer product samples when available.
· Document in the chart:
o Baumann Skin Type
o Product recommendations
o Any modifications made
o Notes about preferences, sensitivities, or follow-up needs
8. Retail and Compliance Strategy
· Walk client through in-clinic or online ordering process.
· Offer guidance on introducing new products gradually (e.g., retinoids 2–3x/week).
· Set expectations for purging, acclimation, or sensitivity and how to manage it.
· Schedule follow-up call or visit in 4–6 weeks to assess response and compliance.
9. Follow-Up Protocol
· Encourage clients to track skin changes (photos or notes).
· Update regimen as seasons, treatments, or goals change.
· Reassess Skin Type with quiz if major changes in health, hormones, or environment occur.
